Pantry rotation for everyday households
Buy a little extra of what you already eat, use the oldest first, replace on your next shop — the UK Prepare campaign calls it building gradually on regular trips; the same idea is often described as pantry rotation or eat-oldest-first (FIFO).
Three steps
- Target — Start with ~3 days of staples per person, then move toward a week if you have space.
- Store in the open — Same cupboard as daily food; mark “use first” dates.
- Rotate — Cook from the front; restock what you used. No separate “disaster only” food that expires untouched.
Good rotation pantry foods
- Tinned fish, beans, veg, fruit (ring-pull lids help).
- Rice, pasta, oats, crackers, peanut butter.
- Long-life milk, instant soup, coffee/tea you actually drink.
- Pet food and baby items on your normal brands where possible.
Every six months
UK guidance suggests checking supplies about every six months — swap expiring items, test batteries, refresh the power bank. See maintain and rotate.
